Maths
Here at Sturton-by- Stow Primary School, we believe that every child can be successful in mathematics. Our aim is to inspire a love of maths by providing rich, engaging and purposeful learning experiences that develop confidence, curiosity and resilience. We want our children to see themselves as mathematicians who are fluent in their mathematical concepts, which allows them to explore different strategies and embrace challenges with a positive mindset.
We aim to help our pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, enabling them to make connections, reason confidently and apply their knowledge to solve problems both within mathematics and across the wider curriculum.
We want children to be:
- Confident mathematicians who believe in their own ability to succeed.
- Fluent in recalling and applying key mathematical facts and procedures.
- Curious learners who enjoy exploring patterns, making connections and asking questions.
- Skilled reasoners who can explain their thinking using precise mathematical vocabulary.
- Resilient problem-solvers who persevere when faced with challenge and learn from mistakes.
- Able to apply their mathematical understanding to real-life contexts and across the curriculum.
Our mathematics curriculum is carefully structured using the White Rose Maths scheme as a scaffold to support teaching and learning. This ensures progression across all year groups whilst allowing teachers the flexibility to adapt lessons to meet the needs of all learners.
At the heart of our teaching is the mastery approach to mathematics, informed by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Through the five big ideas of maths mastery – coherence, representation and structure, mathematical thinking, fluency and variation – we ensure that all children are given the opportunity to achieve and excel. Lessons are designed to promote deep understanding through small, connected steps, allowing pupils to make meaningful links in their learning and develop lasting mathematical knowledge.
Fluency – Mastering Number
To further strengthen number sense and fluency, Sturton- by- Stow is involved in the Maths Hub's Mastering Number programme from EYFS – Year 2, Year 4- Year 5, with the ambition to be accepted onto the mastering number programme for Year 3.
These sessions focus on developing children's understanding of number relationships and core mathematical concepts, ensuring that pupils gain fluency alongside a secure conceptual understanding.
By revisiting and reinforcing key ideas, children build confidence and are able to apply their knowledge with increasing accuracy and efficiency.
Mastering Number Aims (EYFS- Year 2) Mastering Number EYFS & KS1
“ The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.”
Mastering Number Aims (Year 4 – Year 5) Mastering Number KS2
“This project enables pupils in Years 4 and 5 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense.”
