Student Leadership

Here at Sturton- By- Stow Primary School, we believe that every child has the potential to be a leader. We are committed to providing opportunities for our pupils to develop confidence, responsibility, independence and a strong sense of community. Through a range of leadership roles and responsibilities, children are empowered to make a meaningful contribution to school life, represent the views of their peers and become positive role models for others.

We aim to develop pupils who are:

  • Confident communicators who can share their ideas and opinions respectfully.
  • Responsible members of our community who understand the importance of contribution.
  • Positive role models who demonstrate our school values in their actions and behaviour.
  • Compassionate leaders who support the wellbeing and success of others.
  • Active participants in school improvement and decision-making.
  • Prepared for the next stage of their education through increasing independence and responsibility.

Student Governors

Our Year 5 Student Governors play a vital role in ensuring that pupil voice is heard throughout the school. Working alongside the senior leadership team, they undertake research projects, gather the views of the school and investigate areas of school life. They present their findings and recommendations to the governing body, helping to shape future developments and improvements across the school. Through this role, children gain valuable experience in leadership, communication and decision-making.

Reading Ambassadors

Our Reading Ambassadors play an important role in promoting a love of reading across the school. They act as positive role models by demonstrating enthusiasm for books, supporting younger pupils with reading and helping to create a welcoming reading culture. Reading Ambassadors also contribute ideas for reading events, recommend books to their peers and encourage everyone to see reading as enjoyable, inclusive and valuable.

Wellbeing Champions

Our Year 5 and Year 6 Wellbeing Champions are dedicated to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of all pupils. They work alongside our P.H.S.E lead to promote positive mental health, lead wellbeing assemblies and share strategies that help children manage emotions, build resilience and develop positive relationships. As approachable role models, they provide support to their peers and help to create a caring and inclusive environment where every child feels valued and heard.

Year 6 Responsibilities

As our oldest pupils prepare for their transition to secondary school, Year 6 children are entrusted with a range of important responsibilities that reflect their maturity and leadership skills. These roles include leading the school tuck shop, counting Dojos/house points, being Assembly Monitors, and many more opportunities. Pupils have the chance to take on new responsibilities each half-term and are expected to carry out their job during that time, to develop organisational skills, accountability, perseverance and independence whilst contributing positively to daily school life.

Lunchtime Club Leaders

Year 5 and Year 6 pupils are  also encouraged to share their talents and interests by leading lunchtime clubs for younger children. Clubs such as Dance, Loom Bands, Computing and Doodle Club provide exciting opportunities for pupils to take ownership of activities whilst developing leadership and communication skills. By organising and running these sessions, older pupils become positive role models and help to create enriching experiences for others across the school.

House Captains

Our House Captain election process provides a meaningful opportunity for pupils to experience one of our key British Values: Democracy. Following  a lesson on our British Value of Democracy, Year 6 pupils who wish to become House Captains prepare and deliver speeches to the school, explaining why they would be effective leaders.

All pupils are then given the opportunity to vote, and two House Captains are elected for each of our four houses: Oak, Willow, Maple and Horse Chestnut. Throughout the year, House Captains lead a variety of activities, encourage teamwork and house spirit, one of the key events is leading, supporting and encouraging on our school Sports Days.

Impact

Through our wide range of leadership opportunities, we aim to nurture confident, responsible and compassionate young people who understand that their voice matters and that they have the power to make a positive difference to the world around them.
