Physical Education (P.E)

At our school, Physical Education plays an important role in promoting pupils’ physical development, confidence, teamwork and enjoyment of active lifestyles. We use Twinkl to support our PE lessons, helping staff to plan engaging, well-structured activities that build progressively on pupils’ knowledge and skills. Twinkl provides a wide range of high-quality resources that support teaching, assessment and differentiation, enabling lessons to meet the needs of all learners.

We aim to ensure all pupils:

Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.

Are physically active for sustained periods of time.

Engage in competitive sports and activities.

Lead healthy, active lives.

Most PE lessons are taught by class teachers, allowing staff to develop their own subject knowledge and teaching confidence within the curriculum. This approach also ensures that PE is fully integrated into everyday classroom practice and that pupils benefit from consistent expectations and teaching across the school. In addition, teachers are able to adapt lessons to suit the needs, interests and abilities of their classes.

We also work with JB Sports, an external coaching agency, to enrich our PE provision. Their specialist input helps to broaden pupils’ experiences and introduces them to new sporting skills and activities that they may not have previously encountered in school. This partnership also supports staff development, as teachers can observe high-quality coaching approaches and strengthen their own practice through collaboration.

  • PE in Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, our aim is for children to develop a strong foundation in movement and physical activity. Pupils are supported to:

    • master basic movements, including running, jumping, throwing and catching.

    • develop balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.

    • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.

    • perform dances using simple movement patterns.

These objectives help children build physical confidence, improve body control and begin to understand how to work effectively with others.

  • PE in Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, pupils continue to develop and refine their physical skills through a wider range of activities and increasingly challenging tasks. Children use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination. They also:

    • play competitive games, modified where appropriate, such as badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.

    • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance, for example through athletics and gymnastics.

    • perform dances using a range of movement patterns.

    • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.

    • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Through these experiences, pupils learn to set goals, reflect on their progress and build resilience. PE also encourages cooperation, leadership and respect for others, supporting pupils’ wider personal development alongside physical achievement.

Our PE curriculum aims to ensure that all children develop a positive relationship with physical activity and are equipped with the skills, confidence and motivation to lead healthy, active lives.
